The WordPress page lists your websites, shows which ones run WordPress, the version, and how many updates are waiting.
Install WordPress
WordPress can be installed on a website whose folder is empty (apart from the standard welcome page).
- On the WordPress page, choose Install WordPress… next to the website.
- Fill in:
- Site title – you can change it later in WordPress.
- Language – for example Dansk or English.
- Administrator user name – not "admin"; that is the first name attackers try.
- Administrator e-mail – where WordPress sends password resets and warnings.
- Choose Install WordPress.
The panel creates a database and database user for WordPress and installs it, all in one go. The administrator password is shown once – save it in your password manager straight away. After a minute or two, choose Log in to WordPress.
Before you install, get a free certificate on the Websites page so WordPress is set up with https:// from the start. See HTTPS and certificates.
Updates
The Updates column shows a new WordPress version and the number of plugins and themes with updates. Up to date means there is nothing to do.
Update all updates WordPress itself, all plugins, all themes and translations. It runs as your own account, so file permissions stay correct. Updates can now and then break a plugin, so check that you have a recent backup first – we make one every night.
The list is checked every ten minutes; choose Check again to see the result of an update at once.
Keep WordPress safe
- Install updates every week or two. Most hacked WordPress sites ran an old plugin.
- Delete plugins and themes you do not use – deactivating is not enough.
- Use a strong, unique password and turn on two-factor authentication in WordPress, for example with the "Two Factor" plugin.
- Editing theme and plugin files from inside WordPress is switched off on sites installed here. Change code with SFTP or the file manager instead.
Moving an existing WordPress site here
- Make a full copy of the old site with a plugin such as Duplicator or All-in-One WP Migration, or copy the files and export the database.
- Upload the files to
example.dk/publicwith SFTP. - Create a database on the Databases page and import the old one with the database admin tool.
- Put the new database name, user and password in
wp-config.php. The database host is the server name shown on the Databases page. - When everything works, point the domain to us.
