With an SFTP program you can copy many files at once between your computer and the website. The settings are on the SFTP / FTP page.
The settings
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Server | The server name shown on the SFTP / FTP page |
| Protocol | SFTP, port 22 (recommended) |
| or | FTP with TLS, port 21, "Require explicit FTP over TLS" |
| User name | The login from the list, e.g. c1042 |
| Password | The login's password |
Plain FTP without encryption is not allowed, because it sends your password unprotected.
Set or change the password
The panel does not show passwords that already exist. Choose New password next to the login: a new password is created and shown once. Programs that use the old one must get the new one.
FileZilla step by step
- Download FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org and install it.
- Choose File > Site Manager > New site.
- Protocol: SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol. Host: the server name. Port: 22.
- Logon Type: Normal. Enter the user name and password.
- Choose Connect. The first time, FileZilla asks you to trust the server's key; choose OK.
- On the right you see your home folder. Website files go into
example.dk/public.
Other programs such as Cyberduck, WinSCP and Transmit use the same settings.
Extra logins
Give a web designer or a backup tool its own login instead of yours:
- Under Extra login, choose a user name (up to 20 letters and digits). It gets your account name in front, e.g.
c1042_designer. - Under Limit to folder, type the folder it may use, for example
example.dk/public. It cannot see anything outside that folder. Leave it empty for the whole account. - Tick Read only (can download, cannot change files) if it should only download.
- Choose Create login. The password is shown once.
Delete the login when the work is done. Its files are kept.
Good to know
- Files you upload belong to your account, so PHP can read and change them. You do not need to change permissions to 777; that is never needed here and is unsafe.
- For a few files, the file manager in the browser is quicker.
